A Town Election in April

Tuesday night marks the last Town Board meeting before the filing period for candidates interested in serving on the Luther Town Board of Trustees. The public meeting is at 7:00 pm at 18120 E Hogback Road at the Luther Community Building. If you cannot attend, the meeting will be broadcast live on The Luther Register’s Facebook page.

The board agenda for the January 10 meeting is here.

Filing for four Trustee seats and Clerk/Treasurer will be held February 6 – 8, 2017, at the Oklahoma County Election Board.

The election is April 4.

According to Town Ordinance 2-103: Board of Trustees: the board of trustees shall consist of five trustees, nominated at large and elected at large in the town. Each trustee shall be an actual resident of the town. The term of office for a trustee shall be four years beginning at twelve o’clock noon on the second Monday following the general municipal election. The trustee shall serve until his successor is elected and qualified.

The trustee elections are supposed to be staggered but due to various resignations, four seats are open this round. Ron Henry is the only current trustee who does not face re-election.

From the election held April 7, 2015, here are those results combining absentee, early voting and election day ballots, according to records from the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Ronald J Henry 65 votes (30%)
Kim Bourns 34 votes (16%)
Sondra Jean Stafford 33 votes (15%)
Lea Ann Jackson 83 votes (39%)
TOTAL VOTES CAST 215

Unexpired Term
Brenda Nell Henry 63 votes (47%)
Carolyn Lawson 72 votes (53%)
TOTAL VOTES CAST 135

From the election held January 31, 2014, here are those results combining absentee, early voting and election day ballots, according to records from the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Allen Parrish 31 votes (35%)
Lea Ann Jackson 43 votes (48%)
Ronald Johnson 11 votes (12%)
Gerald McCauley 4 votes (5%)
TOTAL VOTES CAST 89

From the election held April 2, 2013, here are those results combining absentee, early voting and election day ballots, according to records from the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Birlene Langley 87 votes (18%)
Gregg H Atkinson 119 votes (25%)
Jeremy Ring 25 votes (5%)
Gary T. Anderson 61 votes (13%)
Carolyn Lawson 52 votes (11%)
Shane L Mustard 27 votes (6%)
Cecilia Taft 115 votes (24%)
TOTAL VOTES CAST 458

The current board is comprised of Cecilia Taft, Ron Henry, Carolyn Lawson, Birlene Langley and Andy McDaniels, who was appointed to serve after the resignation of Jackson last year.

The position of Clerk/Treasurer has been embattled. Former Clerk/Treasurer Donita Roby was arrested in 2014 and charged with embezzling $48,000 from the Town. She is currently repaying the Town at $200 per moth as part of a suspended sentence. Just in the year since The Luther Register began posting, two more appointed Clerk/Treasurers have resigned.

Current Clerk/Treasurer Kim Bourns was appointed in October.

The Town Board is expected to take action at its January 10, 2017, meeting to call for the election.
