Pecan Cook-Off Returns to Luther Pecan Festival, Supporting Local Firefighters

The Luther Pecan Festival is excited to welcome back its popular Pecan Cook-Off, proudly sponsored and organized by Food and Flowers.Farm, a local gardening resource company. Calling all chefs, bakers, and pecan recipe perfecters – whether home cooks, professionals, or students – enter your best in the pecan cook off and help us celebrate Luther’s favorite nut, the PECAN! There is an adult and a youth division.

Contestants will drop off their creations at the Luther Fire Department, 110 S. Ash, on Nov. 16, 2024, between 10 am – 11 am. A panel of experts will then judge their efforts in three categories: best pie (a category of its own), best sweet, and best savory dish. The judges will have such a tough job crowning the best pecan-forward creation of 2024! It’s a tough job but someone has to do it!

To add to the fun, when the finalists are announced on the Pecan Festival stage on Main Street at approximately 1 pm, Food and Flowers Farm will host an auction featuring pecan entries and more as a fundraiser for supplies and equipment to help our favorite firefighters who give so much of their time as volunteers to protect our community.

There are two ways to register for the cookoff. Pre-registration is online here, or entrants may sign up for the contest in person when they bring their confections and masterpieces to the contest on Nov. 16 (from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Luther Fire Department, 110 South Ash). The entry fee of $10 will be donated to the dedicated men and women of the Luther Fire Department for equipment and supplies.

This event is not just for the contestants who will compete for prizes and bragging rights, but the public can take part by bidding on the entries in the auction. Whether you’re craving sweet, savory, or something in between, this deliciously competitive event will be a festival highlight. Many thanks to 4 Our Community and Luther 4H for organizing this event in prior years. It’s always fun but lots of work.

This year, we are bringing back the third category of SAVORY to join a Pecan Pie, and a Pecan Sweet (cake, cookie, candy, etc) category. Savory could be anything from a rack of pecan-smoked ribs, to an appetizer, salad, or soup featuring pecans. This category balances the sweetness of tasting all of those pies and cakes and candies and other confections! We extend a special invitation to our pecan festival food trucks and vendors to enter the contest along too! Let’s see what you got!

Entries will be judged on appearance, texture, and of course, taste!

Best wishes to everyone perfecting their recipes, and kudos ahead to those who get to taste test during practice rounds! Someone’s gotta do it!
