Lady Lions Come Close Against Jones

“We competed well,” Coach Johnny Vick said of his team Thursday night. The last game before Christmas Break brought a packed house to the Lions court as the Ladies hosted the undefeated Jones Longhorns.

The Lions stayed in there all game, trailing but always within striking distance. At the half, the Lions were just down one point. But at the end of the match, the Longhorns had pulled ahead for a 68 – 56 win. The girls game was the second of three games Tuesday night featuring the JV and Varsity boys.

“I like where we are,” said Coach Vick as he will get his team ready for a tough January that will feature 12 games including two tournaments against tough competition. They’ll take one week off for Christmas.

Caitlin Bailey and Shawntae Silva

Senior Caitlin Bailey scored 14 points. The Longhorns worked to keep the ball out of her hands, but she fought all game only fouling out when there were only 33 seconds left in the game. Her buckets tonight added to her thousand point career marker with only 134 points to go.

Jones had 15 team fouls in each half to Luther’s nine in the first half and 11 in the second.

The Lions high scorer was Raychel Stanfield with 21 points. Lauren Coates dropped in 18 points and Bailie Wilds had three points.

Luther Lion Maia Wright
2018 Lady Lion Maia Wright was honored at the game.

During half-time of the boys game, Lady Lion Alumnae Maia Wright was honored before the capacity crowd. The 2018 alumnus surpassed the 1,000 point mark during district play her senior year. She played in the Little All City All Star Game, the OGBCA All State Game, and was the top scorer last July in the OBCA All State Game.

Wright is also a three time State Academic Champion during her time at Luther. She currently plays basketball at Crowder College in Neosha, Missouri.
