MVP & LION FOOTBALL AWARDS

Mossy's Milk Soapery

It might always be a “great day to be a Lion” but it was also a busy day to be a LION on Saturday. A group of senior football players hustled to Alva for another look at Northwestern Oklahoma State University (note: Letter of Intent initial signing day is February 7), then drove back (no doubt following speed limits!) for a football banquet back home. After food, awards and applause, some bounced over to the gym to see the charity basketball game with ABI (Amputee Basketball Invigorated) versus LIONS coaches, dads and fans.

At the banquet, Coach Zack Smith had a long list of thanks and awards to disperse. He thanked parents and volunteers, including the Touchdown Club and Scott and Kandyce Mitchell who gave us the podcast Friday Night Wrapup with Zack Smith. For the event itself, parents decorated in red and black with balloons and food was catered locally by 116 Market, Farmstead & Table.

It takes a village to run a football program and Coach thanked everyone from his coaches, sidelines staff, water girls and middle school ball boys for serving. In addition, the Scout Team received “Trey’s Troops” t-shirts for their hard work all season.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of player awards while enjoying the company of more than 100 members of LION pride at the high school commons.

And now for a moment of editorial privilege, Coach also thanked The Lion Reporter. Sydney Scheer spent two sacrificial seasons covering every single Lions football game after her LHS graduation. We followed The Lion Reporter on Twitter and FB, and read her stories on this website. She made it look easy – but it’s not easy. From taking good action photos in low light to transcribing stats to capturing the emotion and drama of each game – The Lion Reporter kept after it. We must also mention the tango of loading pics and rural internet problems that kept both of us up late many times! She’s a full-fledged nursing student now at UCO and has retired from her volunteer job of covering the games for The Luther Register. The team presented her with a giftcard for her scrubs wardrobe, and The Register wants her to greet her future patients in style, so we gifted her with a rosegold stethoscope, plus some Luther Register swag. And so, we look for more sports writers to cover all Lions Athletics, and more support and sponsorships too.
