The Luther Middle School cheer squad is gearing up to host a Valentine’s dance March 4, from 6-9 pm at the Community Center. Admission is $5 and open to fifth and sixth grade students. Concession items will be available for purchase.
Cheerleaders are fundraising for new uniforms and summer camp for the 2017-18 squad.
Casey Gilliland heads the LMS cheer program. She requires more than just athleticism and sportsmanship from her squad members. They must maintain their GPAs and adhere to a strict code of excellence in order to represent their school.
Coach Gilliland says,” I’ve coached some of these girls for as long as 6 years. I feel responsible for the entire squad; not just as their coach, but a mentor and role model as well. I know that they are all capable of greatness in whatever they do. I want to expand the cheer program and extend that to more cheer candidates in Luther Middle School. ”
Luther Lions cheerleaders are hoping for a great turnout at the dance. Money raised will be used to purchase new uniforms. For basketball season, the squad is reusing their Little League uniforms. Several squad members are in borrowed uniforms.
After uniforms, summer camp is the next item on the agenda. The 2017-18 squad will be attending a day camp this summer with their coach. A former Luther Lions middle school and high school cheerleader herself, Mrs. Gilliland says camp opens a whole new door for the girls. “They see cheerleaders at the collegiate level and learn from some of the best. It’s important to show them what they could potentially accomplish themselves if that is their desire.”
Watch out for future LMS Cheer fundraisers, including an upcoming t-shirt sale. We’ll keep you posted!
