Expecting a Crowd, Town of Luther plans to livestream Tuesday meeting

The Town of Luther staff has prepared for larger-than-usual attendance at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting. On the agenda is a discussion (not action) item regarding Beltline Energy’s recently filed application to build a data center near the OGE power plant within the town limits, and public hearings on that application are scheduled for next month. There are three other data center-related issues: a data center zoning ordinance, a data center moratorium, and the appointment of a new planning commissioner.

Town Manager Rian Harkins said they made attempts to secure another venue. “However, by mid-afternoon yesterday, we were not successful. Police department personnel felt that any venue change at that point, or now, would be difficult to ensure adequate public safety.”

The full agenda also includes consideration of the town’s budget for the new fiscal year that begins on July 1, 2026, a lot split for residential housing, an $8,000 expenditure for the town’s fireworks show planned on Friday, July 3, and other regular business conducted at monthly meetings.

Town Manager Rian Harkins said, “staff will attempt to adjust for potential crowds as we have space,” including:

  • Sign-up sheets for those wishing to speak on specific agenda items will be located in the lobby at 108 S Main to help with traffic flow
  • A new timer with a designated timekeeper will help with the two-minute timeframe for comments
  • A local business has lent microphones and speakers to help everyone hear comments
  • Additional police officers will help with security.
  • Livestream on the Town’s Facebook page

Harkins also said the Luther Fire Department has rated the room’s occupancy at 65 persons.
