The Luther Fire Department has issued a warning about elevated fire danger, particularly Friday. Due to dry conditions, high temperatures, and gusty winds, the risk of wildfires is significantly increased. As a result, no burn permits will be approved, and residents are urged to take extra precautions to prevent accidental fires.
If you have recently burned debris or have active burn piles, ensure they are fully extinguished. Use water to thoroughly soak the area and stir the ashes to confirm no embers remain. Even a small spark can ignite a devastating wildfire under these conditions.
Fire Safety Tips for High-Danger Days
- Avoid Outdoor Burning: Do not burn trash, leaves, or debris. Even if you have a burn permit, it’s best to postpone burning until conditions improve.
- Be Cautious when working Outdoors. Activities like welding, grinding, or using power tools can create sparks. If possible, delay these tasks or take extreme precautions, such as having a fire extinguisher or water source nearby.
- Check Vehicles and Equipment: Ensure chains on trailers are not dragging, as they can create sparks. Park vehicles on paved or gravel surfaces, as hot exhaust systems can ignite dry grass.
- Dispose of Cigarettes Properly: Never toss cigarette butts out of car windows or onto the ground. Use an ashtray and ensure they are fully extinguished.
- Clear Dry Vegetation: If you live in a high-risk area, clear dry grass, leaves, and other flammable materials around your home to create a defensible space.
- Report Fires Immediately: If you see smoke or flames, call 911 immediately. Early reporting can help firefighters contain wildfires before they spread.
