After a winter storm that brought icy roads and unexpected days off, Apple Creek Learning Center was back open Thursday, welcoming about half of its usual 100 students. For owner Darci Bolner, closing for two days was a tough call—balancing the safety of staff and families with the need to be there for parents trying to get back to work.
As things thaw out, Apple Creek is looking ahead to a big milestone. This fall marks 20 years of serving Luther’s little ones—not just in the classroom but in the community, too. From Fourth of July parade floats to Main Street’s Trunk or Treat, Apple Creek has been part of so many special moments in town.
Here’s some more of our email conversation.
LRN: Did you close during the winter storm this week?
Darci: Yes, we closed for two days. Deciding to close is always difficult because we balance the safety of our staff and families with the need to be available for parents who must get to work. On Thursday, we reopened, hoping to help families get back into routine—and we had 46 children in attendance!
LRN: How can we support you now that the roads are clear and temperatures are rising?
Darci: We are always grateful for the random toy and book donations—they go to good use! Most of all, we appreciate your support in keeping Apple Creek, our teachers, children, and their families in your prayers.
LRN: Remind us of your hours and any updates about your business.
Darci: We’re open Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and we have immediate openings for a couple of four-year-olds!

LRN: What should people know about the challenges—and blessings—of running a business in a small town like Luther?
Darci: Right now, our biggest challenges come from the state—funding shortages and ever-changing requirements. Even so, we remain committed to serving low-income families through state assistance, no matter the hurdles. It’s always worth it!
As for the blessings? There are too many to count. Spending our days with these little humans is a privilege and pure joy!
Apple Creek will celebrate 20 years in business this fall!
Thank you, Luther, for believing in us and trusting us with your beautiful children. Here’s to 20 more years!
