Sadness and shock spread through Luther Friday morning when news circulated that outgoing Superintendent Dr. Sheldon Buxton has passed away.
Unconfirmed reports say that Dr. Buxton apparently suffered a stroke while driving with his family in another state. More information from authorities is being gathered, but this is the information that was shared at school and spread throughout the community Friday, leaving many in shock and grief.
Dr. Buxton, 67, joined the Luther School District in the 2013-2014 school year with bright hopes. He announced his resignation in December and was to be with the district until June 30, 2017. Mr. Barry Gunn has been named the new Luther superintendent and had the difficult task of informing teachers, staff and students this morning.
Dr. Buxton had a long career in education. He was Dean of the College of Education at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville. He also had spent 15 years at the University of Central Oklahoma, among many other posts in education.
It goes without saying that prayers are asked for the Buxton family, the Luther school district, and for his many friends in the community who are grieving. Dr. Buxton had said his passion was strong to help this generation with their education and career paths wherever that next step might have taken him. “The potential for the district is immense. My prayers are that the students will benefit from the implementation of your collective potential in the Luther Community and in the future,” he wrote in his resignation letter. Among his survivors are his wife and young son, and he made his home in Sallisaw.
