The Luther Town Board of Trustees is expected to post the meeting notice for the postponed June Regular meeting as soon as a venue is secured. They have until late Monday to post the location to comply with the agenda-posting requirements for public notice of a Special (postponed) meeting, which must be posted 48 hours before the meeting on Wednesday, June 17.
The Tuesday, June 9, meeting abruptly adjourned as soon as it started, due to issues accommodating the large crowd. A social media and public frenzy over a Special Use Permit zoning application from Beltline Energy to build a data center near the Red Bud Power Plant drew a record crowd, and security measures were ramped up amid online threats. While the application was on the agenda for discussion, it was not an action item. Still, residents and others want to take every opportunity to speak for or against the project, something the trustees seem willing to do as they navigate unprecedented public interest. Two public hearings on the issue are scheduled on July 13 and 14, 2026.
Most locals might assume the best place for the meetings would be the auditorium at Luther Public Schools.
That is not an option. Luther Register News received a comment from LPS Superintendent Barry Gunn.
“I understand that the auditorium would be a more comfortable venue, but after much consideration and discussion, the liability at that facility is just too high, for numerous reasons. In an attempt to help, we have offered the community center, which I understand won’t accommodate the expected crowd, so the HS gym is the only other facility that we have that can hold that many people,” said LPS Superintendent Barry Gunn.
The gym does not have air conditioning, as students, athletes, and Luther Lions fans well know. At 5 pm on Tuesday, during a tour, the facility’s thermometer read 86 degrees, with no lights on or a crowd.
Another option might be to hold the meeting on Main Street or somewhere else outside. With liability and safety concerns, other nearby venues are also being considered.

A new website has appeared online, presumably published by the Georgia energy company. It refers to their project as the Luther Horizon Technology Park, and is similar to information in the SUP application, but fancier.
