Luther will have a Christmas to remember this holiday season. Several holiday festivities are planned, beginning the first weekend of December. The highly anticipated new original stage production, “A Christmas to Remember,” will debut with two performances, along with a holiday market, parade, Christmas tree lighting, and more, on December 5-7.
Luther First Christian Church Pastor Johnny Melton wrote the play “A Christmas to Remember,” which will give audiences our first Luther public stage production in years. Set in 1970s small-town America, the story follows a young adult with special needs whose kindness transforms a man who is homeless. Directed by Amy Manchester Borg (Lifetime, Cream Productions), and featuring several local actors, the play will be performed at the LaVern Veasy Performing Arts Center at Luther High School, 18001 N Luther Road, on Friday, December 5, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 7, at 2 p.m. Purchase your $10 tickets at the door.
On Saturday, December 6, shop the Holiday Market beginning at 10 a.m. on Main Street. Vendors and food trucks are participating, allowing us to continue supporting local shopping opportunities for gift-giving and fostering community unity and joy.
On Saturday at 6 p.m., the crowd will gather downtown on Main Street for a tree lighting, a live nativity scene, a choir, and speakers, followed by a Christmas Parade. Parade participants are needed. Registration is open to floats, bands, athletic groups, bikes, four-wheelers, businesses, musical groups, and more. To enter, text your entry information and ask your questions at 405-826-0320.
Visit the “A Christmas to Remember” Facebook page to keep up with all of the details, hear from the actors, order a t-shirt, and more.
Patrice Christy, writer and organizer, is the mastermind behind the entire “Christmas to Remember” weekend, pouring her talent and heart into all of the many festivities. With a team of her faithful “elves,” they have worked behind the scenes for the last year. The play itself sparked Patrice’s curiosity, giving her a vision to bring holiday joy and meaning back to our small town. All proceeds from the weekend will benefit the Luther Ministerial Alliance, a group of five local congregations. The LMA serves our community by providing financial assistance with gas, utilities, medicine, rent, and property losses. The LMA also gives scholarships to high school seniors.
But wait, there’s more.
On Friday, December 5, from 6–8 p.m., the Luther Parks Commission Christmas Celebration will also help light up Main Street with its annual carriage rides ($4 for adults, $2 for kids), a bounce house, kids’ crafts, a visit from Santa Claus, and food (cash only). Downtown Luther shops will also be open late that evening. With a 7 pm curtain for the play, and careful planning, we could partake in both events on Friday night or attend the play on Sunday afternoon if we stay on Main Street Friday evening. Some of us will want to attend both performances. Regardless, make plans to gather your family and friends and plan to support and enjoy all that this special weekend has to offer. It will be a Christmas to remember.
